When I attempt to start my Mercruiser 4.3 litres, sometimes the starter does not turn over on the first or second attempt. Once it turns over, the engine starts fine. Not sure whether the problem is in ignition switch with key or whether the starter is suspect. Is there a safety contact in throttle/shifter which prevents starting in gear.

What should I look/listen for to try and diagnose the source of the problem?

thanks for any help

I would look at the fat black & red cables & their connections first.....Clean all the connections first and then see if they (the cables) get hot.....If they do, replace them....Could be starter...See Don S. post.....State your year/make/ s/n if possible....JK

Look at your remote solenoid - mine's on the left top side of the engine (when facing the pulleys). There are 4 wires going to it - check for corrosion and voltage at each of the wires with the key in the on position and start position - about a 25 dollar part.
