i am restoring a 1994 four winns and it currently doesn't have a throttle (which I am replacing) and the key cabling to the starter is currently disconnected (which I plan to fix soon).

I am currently working on the motor. What is the best way to start a motor temporarily without a throttle and ignition key? Thanks.

Re: starting motor question

I would disconnect the electrical harness that goes to the top of engine.
Find the water intake hose that runs TO the water pump from the transom and put a garden hose to it or you can use muffs to out drive BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRESH WATER FLOWING THRU YOUR BLOCK AT ALL TIMES
make sure you have a good Ground from the battery to the block.
make sure you have a good connection to the starter from positive HOT of the battery to the postive HOT to the starter.
connect a remote starter button to the hot side of the starter and then connect the remote button negative to neg. side of the starter. WHEN YOU HAVE DONE ALL THAT
Now run a wire from the HOT side of the battery to the HOT side of the coil make it easy to disconnect if there is an emergency turn on the water so it is passing thru the motor and down and out of the out drive. And push the starter remote button and see what happens....................the motor should fire and begin to run or fart or turn over and do nothing
but that should get you in the right direction

Re: starting motor question

to turn off the motor simply disconnect the wire from the battery going to the coil the motor will die
but make sure you get the polarity right postive+ and neg.- you dont want to fry anything, that why I say disconnect the Harness at the top of the motor.
Have fun:D
