Starting my rebuild today.

I posted a week or so ago about a 1999 Welcraft and 115 Johnson (with a bad cylinder) I picked up for almost nothing. I started my rebuild this morning and have a couple of preliminary questions. First I would like to mention I got an added bonus with this new project. Years ago when I rebuilt my old 89 110 it was ate up with corrosion, making the job much more difficult. This boat I am working on now I believe has never or seldom been used in salt water. The engine so far is totally free of corrosion, it's as clean as the day it came off the assembly line. I ordered a manual for this motor which is actually a 98 (J115TSLECM) so I will be tearing it down without a manual. I removed the carbs and all the electrical parts this morning and am probably about an hour away from removing the power head. I

Hope to have it ready for the machine shop Monday and as soon as I get word on the boring measurements I will be ordering parts. This leads to my question. When I bought the boat I did a compression test and 3 cylinders were 118 lbs and the fourth was 85 lbs. I removed the heads to look at the damage and the bad cylinder was scored. The head was dinged up too. Do I need to replace that head or can the dings be ground down or resurfaced somehow? Anybody know what a new matching cylinder head costs? I already know about what the rest of the parts are going to run me.

You can pick up a used head for 25-35 bucks. Replace that head. If you do not, you might be building that motor again at a later date.

And make sure it matches the remaining good head. Dont assume it does now. Most likely it does but check.

Thanks.....Dhadley I get the feeling you have had the problem of not checking to see if the head matches the good one in the past? It's just that I have seen you mention that before and I know most of us never forget past mistakes.

Re: Starting my rebuild today.

Ok one more question. As soon as my son brings a hoist over here I am ready to lift the powerhead off this boat. Like I said earlier I just ordered a manual and am working from memory right now. My old 89 110 had a screw under the bottom carb that had to be removed to disconect the shift rod. I always hated it because it was a ***** to get to. It is dark down there and I am not seeing that screw on this one. I wondered if they have changed the way that shift rod connects?

Ive seen lots of motors with mismatching heads. They seem to run OK but it sometimes throws off the compression and is misleading.

Actually I bought a brand new 200XP once that had 2 different heads from the factory. And neither one was an XP head.

Re: Starting my rebuild today.

Dhadley that is funny but I have it beat. In 82 I bought the wife a new Chevrolet Monte Carlo. It wasn't running right and with about 20,000 miles on it I took it in for warantee work. The service manager and I got into an arguement because he swore someone had switched carburators on it. The numbers on the carb came up in the computer as a marine carb. After some research they determined my Chevy engine was the first 350 off the assembly line at GM after they had switched the line from marine engines to car engines. Guess someone was asleep on the job.
