starting problems

I have a 1990 Johnson GT100. When i first start the engine for the day it starts fine. After it has been running for a while and i stop the engine to fish it is hard to crank back up. I usually have to turn the key 3 to 4 times to get it to start. Even then, I have to lift the idle lever pretty high to get it started. Anyone have any ideas to what this problem may be?

Re: starting problems

It sounds like it's flooding out, could be an inlet needle or high float level--Bob

it's funny you say flooding out. when i do get it started back up and put it in gear, it sometimes shuts off like it is flooding out. what would i need to do to fix this problem?

Re: starting problems

carb rebuilds with a good manual should do it.

Re: starting problems

Thanks for all of the info guys! I have a factory manual on the way. Should i buy the kit off of iboats? if so, should i also replace the needle, seat and float as well? Does anyone know the kit number for this motor? the motor is a 1990 johnson gt 100 mod. # J100STLESB. I think the kit # is 18-706.

Re: starting problems

Replace everything you can and make sure that you soak the carb in cleaner for at least 12 hours and blow all the passages out with compressed air. any little thing left in one will negate your rebuild.

Re: starting problems

any good carb cleaner will work. I get some that I can dump in a stainless bowl that I have so it can really soak.
