Starting procedure?

What is everyone's starting procedure? I have a 25R73 and it is giving me fits! See (another engine wont start thread).

What does everyone do when starting their 10-25hp pull start engine. Do you always squeeze the bulb regardless of the last time you ran it? Do you always pull the first pull with the choke out when it is cold? Do you use the choke at all when it is warm? How many times on average do you pull it without pulling the choke when it is cold/warm?

I am constantly flooding my engine... and now my shoulder hurts

I have a 98 Evinrude 25hp that is a pull start. I've owned this engine since it was brand new and the starting sequence has always been the same......

On a cold start, I first prime the bulb till hard. (5-10 squeezes) I pull the manual primer all the way out and in twice and stop at the red warm up ring. I open the throttle about a 1/4 way open on tiller handle and grasp the rope. She always fires on the second pull and purrs like a kitten. I count to 30, push in the primer knob and close the throttle. We are ready to run!

For the rest of the day she fires with one pull. If i've been fishing for several hours and it doesn't crank on the first pull, I'll work the manual primer and it always fires up the next pull. I don't have to mess with the bulb, usually. When I go home for the evening and take it out the next day, I will squeeze the primer bulb to make sure it is hard.

The only time I have had to pull the rope numerous times is if my fuel line is bad or I'm having a carb issue.

FYI: my cold start procedure is the same no matter if is July or December.

Re: Starting procedure?

are you using champion j6c sparkplugs .030 - .040 gap?...on my '71 25 hp. < universal magneto ignition >..electric start..it's..pump the bulb firm, advance the throttle as far as possible in neutral, pull on the choke, hit start button, motor fires in 3 seconds, push choke off instantly. When warm, no choke, bump the start button, fires up.
I understand your frustration and from my experience with other 2 strokes of varying types, if nothing occurs after the fourth or fifth pull with the choke on, the motor is likely flooded. Remove the plugs and dry them, a ligher works well, or reinstall some dry plugs, no choke, and see if it'll start. Once those plugs are wet it really becomes an exercise in futility to continue pulling.

My arm and the blisters on my hand will agree. Besides pulling the plugs is there a way to tell if it is flooded or if it is not getting enough gas?

Re: Starting procedure?

difficult to see down the throat of the 25...if you can stick your finger in the throat and it comes out wet, you've probably got enough fuel. Seems you stated n another thread that you observed fuel mix mist coming from the sparkplug holes with the plugs out and while pulling the motor through?..if so, lack of fuel isn't the problem. After the carb rebuild, did you get the idle mixture to respond by turning the needle?..at idle, you should reach a point that turning the needle in <cw> stalls the motor, it'll start sneezing and bucking first. Back the needle out <ccw> until the engine seems like it loads up, then find a point between those 2 extremes that the motor idles well. The idle mixture has more affect on starting than you might realize. At least I found that to be true.

Re: Starting procedure?

Hey Scrit. I owned this same motor, and my cold starting procedure was this:

- Squeeze primer until hard (make sure fuel cap is vented!)
- pull choke out all the way
- advance throttle to 'start' (sometimes a little further)
- pull rope
- once started, let it run for a bit with the choke on, then slowly push it in until it keeps running

Once mine was warm, it generally fired on the first or second pull.

I had problems with mine as well and it gave me fits until I found that the carb float was out of adjustment, which allowed it to flood out. You are right, you'll wear yourself out and start huffing and puffing if you just keep pulling on that thing...

I did have the opportunity to adjust the idle needle correctly. Is this something that I need to adjust every time before starting?
