Re: Starting trouble 85hp Johnson Outboard
a little more info might help... maybe the basics first... are you familiar with how to start your motor? Do you have the fast idle engaged, the primer bulb is pumped, the choke is being held in while you crank? On my V6 merc it is a bit of bear to get fired up when it hasn't been run for awhile... needs fast idle and lots of choke. Once it first fires it needs the choke "bumped" a couple times to keep if from stalling. It will never start from cold if the motor is tilted up more than a bit. (doesn't get enough fuel)... once started it can be tilted up and stays running. Warm it starts tilted up fairly high (with lower unit still in the water) no problem.

If your control box was wired incorrectly, yes it might be possible to crank the motor over while the ignition is being shorted out (like when the key is in the off position). That's why the guys above are saying check for spark while it's cranking over.

If you have spark, then it's likely no (or not enough) fuel getting in. (that's why they suggest to spray premix into the carb's) Don't use starting fluid on a 2-stroke.

Big 2-strokes can be tempermental cold-starting at the best of times...

hope that helps.

Brent
