Starting warm engine with choke and throttle

I have a 1979 Merc 9.8 which I rebuilt the carb, changed impeller, plugs, CDI box, and all wiring.
Finally the engine runs great. There is only 1 more kink I would like to iron out. When engine is warmed up, then shut off. I always need to give it some throttle, then choke it. Pull it once. turn off choke and pull again, then it will start. It always starts on the second pull. The engine idles between 800 and 850 rpms in gear, and around 1100 in neutral.

Is this a normal starting technique for this engine? Maybe I'm just being a little to picky. After all the engine is 30 years old.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Denis

It is not unusual for you to have to add some throttle on a warm engine. Choke depends on how long the motor was shut off. Sounds perfectly normal.

Re: Starting warm engine with choke and throttle

Thanks for putting my mind at ease. After posting this afternoon, I went back out and made some minor air fuel adjustments in the drive way. then I took the boat out this evening for its first run on the water since I put in the new switch box and replaced all the old wiring. It ran beautiful. I shut down the motor a couple of times for a minute or two and it actually started up first pull with no choke or throttle. Now I'm happy.
