Sorry but I'm a noobie to the waters.<br />I have a Chrysler 50HP 2-stroke that purred like a kitten. Then one day it would crank and crank but wouldn't start. I brought it home and got it to start with the hose attachment "muffs" on the motor with water running though it. Purred again! BUT as soon as I got it back out in the canal, it tried to start and would run for about 2-3 sec but killed right away. Plugs, battery & gas is new with right mix.<br /><br /> Also I noticed there is small, very slow trickle of oil now coming from one of the screws on the gearbox on the starboard side. I'd be happy to post a pic of the leak if I can.<br /><br /> Thanks in Advance.

Hello Dj and welcome to iboats. Take the oil you are seeing and smell it. If it smells like gas what you are seeing is unburned oil and gas mix. From your decription of what is happening I am almost positive that is what it is. Sounds like you have lost a cylinder. I would do a compression test and a spark test. When you run it with muffs there is no back pressure so it runs fine on one cylinder. When under water you have pressure and it kills. If compression test passes then you should do spark test. Please post the model number of you motor. If it is a chrysler it should be under the carb somewhere on a metal plate. Number will read something like 50HGA or 50871 or something. Good luck

The Model is 507H3D. Like I said I'm REAL NEW to this. "Lost Cylinder" doesn't sound good. Is that meaning "Motor Shot"?? I am going to do a Compression test today and spark as well.

Well, Haven't done any test yet BUT now it won't stay running hooked up in the yard either. I called a couple mechanics in the area and explained the problem to them and they think it fuel related.(Fingers Crossed) If I choke it it starts and runs for about 3-7 Sec in the yard or canal. No difference now. Gonna try a new bulb like the guy here suggested.

Choking having a postive effect is a good sign. Compression and spark testing will determine if it is severe. Motor is from 1983 which is the last year chrysler stopped producing outboards. You can dump a bunch of money into that motor and then find out you have burned out a cylinder. A compression tester is only 30 bucks. This could be fuel related however with it not working in a lake but running on water muffs sounds like a cylinder is smoked or not getting spark.
