I have a 1974 85hp johnson. When you try and start engine, it will fire up for a short amount of time ( 5 to 10 seconds) and stall. It will restart again and function the same way. I have tried to check according to my manual, fuel good, spark jumps 1/2 gap, compression good. with spark tested installed and spark plugs removed, I engaged starter for about 20 to 25 seconds, did not overheat starter, and watched spark. I lost spark on #1 cyl after about 10 seconds and the spark dropped off on the rest of the cylinders as I continued to crank. According to the steps in my manual, I checked the charge coil and stator with a neon tested, no light. All of this is leading up to my question, is there any way to check stator and charge coil with ohm meter to double check my findings?

Re: starts and stalls

This problem sounds familiar, are you brads friend that the boat flew off the trailer (post about hot terminals)?

Is there any goo running out of the charge coils? Yes, you can check them with an ohmmeter but I'd have to look up the specs. However, if they are leaking goo or are physically damaged, they can test good with the meter (1.5 volts) and still break down at operating voltage (300 volts).

No leakage that I can see, I will pull the the flywheel and do a better visual inspection. Thanks for the information.
