Starts then shuts off!

I have a 99 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro. It starts up so well cold and will run for approximately 2-3 mins and then start spitting and spuddering and shut off and will not restart unless it sits for a couple of hours or so and will bust right off again. I just got this boat and has run fine on a hose so far until this started two days ago. I am pulling fresh gas out of a 6 gallon can right now until I get the on board tank drained. I'm wanting to think its starving for gas but I tried to pump the ball before the engine shut off and it didn't help any or I was to late getting more gas to it. Any suggestions?

Have you checked the spark on it when it quits ?? Spark should jump a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester.

No I have not tried that. I was thinking it was a gas issue. That never crossed my mind. I will try that tomorrow for sure. Thanks!

Does your motor have the primer or a regular choke? I had the same problem with my 70 hp, and it turned out I wasn't priming it enough with the key button. It does sound like a fuel issue though.

That motor should have a primer and the Quickstart feature. The quickstart system will advance the timing until the motor warms up. it then shuts off. You might check the timing when you cold start it and see what it changes to when the motor warms. Maybe the idle timing is wrong, the linkage is stuck, or Quickstart has an issue. I recommend an OEM service Manual.

That is a 6 carb motor, right? Clean the fuel filter under the airbox.

Yes it does have 6 carbs. And I do believe it has the primer on it. Behind the air intake. I'm not familiar at all with this motor. I will look for the fuel filter this morning.
Thanks!

Well I cleaned out the filter and it was full of trash! Connected everything back together and as usual fires right up. Kept the cover off engine and put it in fast idle at about 1000 RPM's and it stayed running for about ten minutes or so until I shut it off. Tried to crank it again and it just rolls over, try to choke it and it just skips and have to start over.

Re: Starts then shuts off!

You have not given a full explanation...for example "and have to start over." from your last post.
What exactly does "start over" mean?
Anyway, I will assume a few details.

When you pump the primer bulb til firm, you fill the carb bowls with gas. There is enough gas in those bowls to run at idle for quite a while, at least 4-5 minutes. So, it sounds like to me, that you are running out of gas after the bowls empty (at idle, I guess...you don't say).

Try pumping the primer bulb as it starts to die. If it picks up, look at the fuel pump. I bet if you pump the bulb sort of continuously, a pump or two every thiry seconds for example, that it will not die out.

Re: Starts then shuts off!

I gave it time to sit and got outside to try and start it again. It busted right off again and is idling at about 550-700 rpm's. I let it idle for a bit then tried pumping the ball while it was running. Gave it a squeeze about every 20 seconds or so. Seemed to stay running but couldn't not really tell the difference in the rpm's as far as an increase. I finally stop pumping the priming ball after about 4 minutes. And just bumped up the rpm's using the fast idle at around 1000 rpm', let it run there around 4 minutes. I then shut it off and tried to crank with no luck. I gave it a little more gas by putting it in fast idle at about 1/4 throttle or a little less, it busted off and continued running till I shut it off. Think im gonna up the rpm's a little bit so it don't sound like its barely running. Thats kinda why I put it in fast idle to keep it running. Had to stop due to weather turning for the worse here in the Florida Panhandle!
Don't think I'm completely out of the woods yet but I appreciate every ones input!!
