Hi, I have a 1971 25 horse Johnson rope/electric start. The motor starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull everytime. But when I use the electric start it back fires and the motor floods out. I have good spark and the starter seems to be turning the motor as fast as it ever did.

It backfires and floods out. Does gas run out of carb? Is it backfiring out of exhaust or carb? Electric starters crank the engine at 2 to 3 times faster than manual starters, try opening your low speed jet about 1/2 turn and see what happens.

Hi, It backfires out the exhaust, and I'm guessing that it is flooded. The plugs are soaked and dripping wet. I dry them off and use the rope it will start right up. A mist of fuel also comes out the exhaust, the longer I try the electric start the more fuel. I have never seen this before and I have had this motor for 7 years now.

I suspect messed up wiring or defective key switch.
