OK First Boat so excuse if I sound like an idiot.

I have twin Mariner 150's (1989)

On my Starboard engine I noticed the other day it was a little tough to start. What was happening is this..... if I went right to a start the engine would attempt to turn over so as I gave it some choke it sounded like it was about to turn over and then it would stop cranking and I would hear a hum from the engine. I would give it another try and it would crank but then go right back to the hum when it seemed like it was about to turn over. Thought I flooded it so I gave it a minute to sit and it happened a couple of more times then finally turned over. This only happened on the starboard engine.

Today I went to give them another shot and I noticed that my port engine did it briefly also but did turn over without a hitch. Guy I bought the boat from told me that he put 25 gallons of gas in just before I bought it but not sure how much gas he had int here from last season and if he put in any sort of stabalizer. I have yet to put any gas in it.

Today when I went to start it happened again but not as bad as last time but still heard that hum when it was about to turn over causing it to stop cranking.

I attempted a video of it while I was starting (link below) but it is tough to hear the hum I am referring to unless you crank up your volume. You can really make it out at the 22 second mark on the video.

Any ideas?

I'll share this....2007 Merc 150 Salty....I pump the bulb firm, turn to key to on, push the choke in/out 8 times, rotate key to start. Fires right up every time. I think you need to choke it a bit more before bumping the starter. Give it a try.

Just so you know "turn over" and "crank" mean the same thing.
When you crank the motor, it turns over.
Sometime they don't "fire" when cranking or turning over.

Make sure all battery cable ends are clean and tight.

Sounds OK to me.Your motor has an enrichener system operated by a solenoid,so on start up turn key to on and push in and hold for 5 seconds and start.Dont forget to open throttle.Do not pump in and out as all this does is open/shut circuit.I was also told to push in/out and took up to 15 min to start some mornings. It now starts 1st or 2nd go.Good Luck.

WD40 on the Bendix, work it up & down by hand the a couple of drops of light oil.

Pump primer bulb.
Lift fast idle lever.
Turn ignition to ON.
Push key in.
Turn ignition to start while still holding key in.

After it starts be ready to control RPM by reducing fast idle lever & bumping key in if needed.

CoastalRichard! You were right on the money. I let her sit for 2 days and we had a chilly night last night so went out first thing this morning pumped the bulbs pushed the choke in 8 times and each engine started up the second I turned the key! Thanks brother!
