stater testing?

How do I test the stater on a 1995 johnson 150? The regulator is shot and I want to make sure the stater is ok before replacing it.

I would start by seeing if it has AC output to the regulator. Different voltages for different motors ... check your shop manual. Most are ≈ 40 to 60 VAC. Does motor run, or completely dead? If it runs OK, the other outputs might be OK and just the regulator is dead.
