working on a 1978 Mercury 500 50. The cheap Clymer manual I bought indicates what wires to test the trigger and stator when performing an OHMS test but says to go to a Mercury Dealer for the voltage tests. What should the stator and trigger voltage's be? Also in what sequence should the wires be tested? Is it the same as when doing an OHMS test? I do have a high doller Fluke Digital Volt/OHMS meter( AMP Clamp). Will this work in place of the DVA?

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

Here is the diagnostic procedure for that distributor ignition. Courtesy of Clams Canino. You need to have +12V on both red (always hot) and the white (ignition on)wires on the switchbox. This test assumes the ignition coil is good. Disconnect batttery, remove the three dist leads from the switchbox. jumper the white and brown distributor connections on the switchbox together. potion the distributor end of the coil wire about 3/8 inch from ground.........reconnect battery and turn key to on position. Now jumper black switchbox terminal to ground and ignition coil should fire each time you touch ground. If it fires each time, switchbox is good, and distributor trigger may be bad.........

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

sorry, I should have mentioned that this is a distributerless ignition. Has only a stator, trigger, switchbox, and coils(4). I read a post ohere that discussed the procedure for checking the voltages but can not find it know. D

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

First, you need a voltmeter with a DVA.
Stator DVA voltage: Bue to Blue/White = 1801V+; Red to Red/White = 20v+
Trigger DVA voltage: Brown to White/ Black and Purple to White = 4v+.

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

Thank you ricksrster, those are the numbers I was looking for. As for the DVA, I have co-worker coming over this morning and he is bringing his. I looked at the one you suggested and he thinks his is the same...I'll post back with my readings...thank you again. D

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

Sierra, Quicksilver, and ES are all the same and made by the same manufacturer.

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

ended up having around 1760 volts between blue and blue/white wires. Is this far enough out of spec to wqarrent replacing the stator? Trigger was right on the money as was yellow and yellow/red on the stator.

Red and Red/White are the high speed windings

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

the red to red/white was 21 volts, brown to white/black was 4 volts, and purple to white was also 4 volts. Should I replace the stator since I have a reading of 1760 on the blue to blue/white? I just cant help but think the stator is slowly leaking off to ground and will get worse over time..Any suggestions?

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

I saw that you had a reading 1700+ volts and that is not possible with the windings of that system it had to be a meter error or something else

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

sorry, my mistake. Just retested and have a reading of 170.6 volts. Does this sound more in the ballpark?

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

The voltage readings you have are close enough.

Both the trigger and stator PASS

You didn't mention your original problem.

Assuming you have a NO spark on one or more cyl's then it is either coil(s), wire(s) or ignition box.

The DVA Meter can also be used to test the output of the ignition module/box to each coil, use the 400 DVA range setting, output to each coil should be equal.

Re: Stator and trigger voltage

I have no problems now. Did have some fuel issues a while back so I rebuilt the carbs, fuel pumps, new fuel line, and tank. Tested the rectifier since the tach wouldnt work and the rectifier was bad. Replaced rectifire and just got to checking the rest of the system for piece of mind.
