stator help

i have a 1978 merc 70 hp it is very hard to start but runs good when it starts i pulled the stator out and the two white wires going to the rectifer are bare and some strands broke i know i need a new stator now but could this be why it is so hard to start

Hi,

I think I would check the carbs before I put a stator on it. If it runs I think your stator might be alright. Fix the wires. Providing you have spark on all 3.

Make sure no 28 is in both carbs and try adjusting the carbs 1/8 turn richer.
the choke or enrichner system can leak air into it from the seal on the shaft going into the carb body. I guess you should check the compression first, they should all be about the same +or - 5#s.
