I've isolated my issue to the stator being the culprit for loss of hi rpm. Engine runs smooth up to 3500 rpm and won't go any higher.
I disconnected the rectifier and wot pegs at 5800 rpm, runs smooth as silk without rectifier. I replaced the rectifier with a new one. Tested the new rectifier before installation with a dvm (Fluke 77 diode test) and had .5 ohms on both inputs to the rectifier. Diodes tested good (1-way continuity, reversed leads and no continuity) Battery is brand new and fully charged. I looked up my serial #6626027, and found 2 different stators that were used for several years. 1 was a 9 amp stator, the other was a 16 amp stator. Does anyone know how to positively ID which I should use? I'm running the boat without the rectifier connected and plan to replace switchboxes, stator and trigger if needed. I don't believe, the trigger is bad since it runs great without the rectifier but I haven't pulled the flywheel to confirm. Wanted to order all the parts at once and spend a rainy weekend in the shop.
Any thoughts or advice on which way to go with this motor - 9 or 16 mp, upgrade to a voltage regulated system, etc?
Thanks all.
