This maybe a repost, sorry if so.

I have a1989 Mercury 45 (aka classic 50)

After about 2 hours of running it wants to shut down. If you drop the RPM down to 2000rpm or below it runs fine, take it back above 2000rpm and its wants to die out.

I beached it ran through a test with my DMM and found the stator ran to ground on the high side. Once I let the stator cool for about 45 minutes it ran fine for about 30 minutes and did it again.

I start buzzing parts books and find stators AND a stator *kit from Mercury. I call Mercury and was told the stators on that motor had issues. They would run too high a voltage and cause the stator to heat up causing the stators to fail.

A regular replacement stator can be found for about $100 , the stator kit is $325.

The kit includes a 'voltage dumb down kit' to reduce the excess voltage, preventing the stator from over heating.

Ok, here is the problem I have. My stator is original! 20 friggin years old! Now I have no idea how much the boat was ran by the original owner, the boat looks perfect, almost new.

Anyone else run into this? Im on the fence between buying a replacement stator or a stator kit.

Re: Stator issues

Buy a original style stator from CDI and you will be better off than the Mercury red stator kit.

Re: Stator issues

The mercury 'red' stator is the company replacement stator. They now offer the stator kit (which is black)

Mercury is telling me that I need the stator kit, that my particular outboard and their basic replacement stators are putting out too much voltage.

I havent looked at the CDI, but Sierra is the only aftermarket company that also offers a full stator kit.

Still dont know what to do  Gurrr
