I am looking to buy a 65 horse power EVINRUDE mod#65373R 1973, they owner said no spark, ok stator issue then, I ask more then he says melted stator.

What would cause this? Did something get fried bad? If I buy the new stator will it be ruined to? Please any help as I would like to buy this soon if the motor is still good if a stator is added.

Thanks!

Listing info:
65 horse power EVINRUDE mod#G5373R with controls and wire harness. Engine has no spark [needs stator] GOOD compression and GOOD lower unite{foot} this engine can be a fixer upper or used for parts i would like to sell it complete

Re: Stator Melted? What caused this?

Most common reason is that the rectifier was damaged, fused the wires inside the rectifier and allowed battery voltage to reach the stator.

The rectifiers can be damaged in a number of ways, but most commonly by someone reversing the battery cables, or having loose cables - it only takes a second.

Anyway, test the rectifier; I'll bet it's cooked.

Thanks, I bet switched cables would be the problem, I just don't want to buy a motor that I cannot fix, I have enough of thise now.

Stator, and rectifier would solve the problem then if no spark is present? (Most likely)

You should still be able to do a compression test, and you can check the rectifier and stator with an ohmmeter if the seller will let you. You could also check the gearcase oil.

Thanks!

Seller says the stator was melted so it is bad, rectifier I bet is too and even if not it would not hurt to replace it. Yes I was told compression (approx 110) was good but I would test it. Gear oil I could only hope is clean but I am realistic.

I will see if he takes my offer with my new information.

Re: Stator Melted? What caused this?

Depends on which coils were melted. A shorted rectifier can do the battery charging (alternator) coils, but that is a 1973 motor and they had a big problem with the original charge coils melting. By "charge coils" I mean the ones that charge the ignition power pack. It was the insulating material running out and a defect in materials choice when they built the motors.

I'm surprised that they are still showing up, because most of them failed within the first couple of years. How many years has it been since this thing ran???

Anyway, replacing the stator will get rid of the problem because the new ones won't have those goo-insulated coils.

Is this a motor to stay away from? I don't want to throw lots of new parts and still have a bad motor.

This is what the stator looks like...

doesn't look like a good deal if it was free.

Re: Stator Melted? What caused this?

Thanks for all the info, I negotiated a trade with a friends kicker motor for this but then he said the prop is gone and he will have it back tomorrow. If that happens I may have a motor and debt to my friend but only time will tell.

I can gladly wait for a different motor if the consensus is this motor/model is junk.

Re: Stator Melted? What caused this?

That year/model was a good motor. But they have a serious potential fault IMHO. At the slightest hint of overheating. the inner exhaust cover warps because it is very thin and unsupported along side the exhaust ports. When it warps, water squirts out---into the exhaust ports and good-bye powerhead.

The one in your picture looks like it has led a rough life.

If the indication of the outside translated to how under the cowling has been treated yes it looks rough from that pic. Nothing a rattle can can't "fix" as long as the motor is mechanically sound. Maybe after sleeping it over I may pass and keep looking. Like I said I have enough problems with my current motors and don't want to replace one with another bad one
