I have a 1982 4 cyl. 1 coil for each cyl. I no current being received by the coils from the switchbox during cranking. I am receiving current from the stator to the switch box. The resistance checked out perfect on the trigger and I disconnected the stop switch wire with no luck. I checked the resistance from the stator. Between the Red and the Red/white it is 7.5 ohm which appears normal, but between the blue and the blue/white it seems a little high at 10.5 ohms. Everyone I talk to says it is the switchbox. Does the high resistance on the blue wires make a diference ? I really want to avoid pulling the flywheel if I can. Can anyone help me figure out if I have a bad stator or is it a bad switchbox. Please Help !

I "think" you are not measuring the stator correctly....<br /><br />I think you should ohm red to blue and then red/white to blue/white....<br />Not red to red, blue to blue as you indicated...<br />How many stator leads do you have? Of the above wires mentioned, where do they go? You only have one switchbox, so that's why I'm interested.<br /><br />But don't trust ohm readings anyway... If you have good voltage coming from the stator and nothing out of the box that's most likely your problem.<br />You are on the right track, you really have to confirm that it's a bad switchbox by the process of elimination...

I have a seloc mercury repair manual. It tells me to check the stator by measuring the resistance between the (blue and blue/white) and between the (red and red/white) it says to do this for every year motor. the leads come from the stator to a row of screw terminals down the right side of the switchbox. They run top to bottom RED/WHITE, BLUE/WHITE, BLACK YELLOW(STOP SWITCH), BLUE, THEN RED.<br /><br />I have cranking voltage coming into the switch box but none leaving the switchbox to the coils. At believe maybe it is the switchbox, but the high resistance at the blue stator wires has me confused. I beleive I have read that the Blue wires are for low speed and the Red wires are for high speed.<br /><br />I am a little confused here and need someone to walk me through this so i don't go buy the wrong part.<br />thank you

I checked to see that there is voltage from the stator, but how much voltage is acceptable ?

Ok, it's good that you have the manual for your motor....<br /><br />My suggestion refers to testing the stator on V6's, obviously a big difference so disregard what I said....<br /><br />You should see in the manual something about peak reading voltage from the stator.... You will need a peak reading multimeter to test it though, I'm not sure what you have....The voltage from the stator will be somewhre in the range of 180+v on the high side and 20+v on the low, these are peak voltage readings AC (if I remember correctly). This is for my stator anyway, you may need to confirm what you have before using those numbers to check against. <br />But the readings will variate so much regardless, a standard digital multimeter won't show a constant reading long enough to detemine what is happening. <br /><br />Again, don't worry to much about the ohm readings on the stator... I ohmed mine out about a month ago, and none of the readings were in range... But my problem turned out to be a bad switchbox. replaced both boxes and problem was solved.
