stator or trigger switch ?

I have a 1974 Merc 402 40 hp with new stator and new switch box I still have that problem when running Fullout about 2 min.and the motor quits or even starting out slow it just dies most times can get it going again after playing with Mixture screw please help... Could this also be the carburetor needing a rebuild
