Hi, I have a V6 200hp merc, I put a new stator on and ran it for about an hour, it seamed ok, tried to restart it, no go, after running some tests I found one side of the stator not working(Open curcit) wouldn't spark one side of the V6, Replaced stator and same thing has happened, any help would be welcome as this is getting expensive.

Re: Stator problems

Is your battery charging? If your rectifier is fried, it could be possible that the rectifier isn't taking all the charge produced by the stator charging coils and as a result this is frying the stator.

Are all you grounds good?

The switchboxes could be doing this as well.

Re: Stator problems

and thats why merc reccomends,as does CDI to replace stators and switchboxes together.
one can take out the other.
next time you get it running test the charge coil outputs to both switchboxes at or near WOT with a peak reading multimeter. my gues is a bias circuit or a voltage regulator in one of your switch boxes has failed or is failing.
its also reccomened to change switch boxes in pairs.
some times the "defective box" was not the cause of the box failure but the other box caused it.
where are you getting the stators from and is it low speed coils or high speed coils that are failing ?

And on that note, get stators and switchboxes from CDI/Rapair. They are much better than OEM as far as Merc and OMC are concerned.

Re: Stator problems

I whole heartly agree that CDI and sierra stuff is vastly supeior to OEM stuff in this instance with CDI being the best I have used and has a very friendly tech help dept.

Re: Stator problems

Thanks Chaps, The stator is from Sierra M & e parts,
Ive not looked at the switchboxes yet but It sounds like that maybe where the problem lies as the battery seams to be charging OK, Just put a new rectifier on, this CDI/repair do they have a webb site, is there a way of testing the switchboxes or Or do I just replace and hope this sorts out the problem,

Re: Stator problems

other than testing the input and output voltages at or near WOT, nope no good way to test them.
battery charging coils share no comon circuts with the switchbox condenser charging coils, the high and low speed coils for the inner and outer boxes respectivly do share common connections.
the stator on your merc has coils for battery charging and coils to supply AC voltage to the switch box, the coils are mounted on a common frame and use the flywheel magnets passing by the coils to generate the various AC voltages and currents needed to perform the task.
you will never see 20 amps out of the condenser charge coils.
while at school for yamaha electrical we were playing with one of the test engines, we were able to get an unregulated 1000plus volts AC at 3500 RPM from the lighting coils.
the fluke overloads at 1Kv AC.
basically 3 ways to generate AC current and voltage, make the coils bigger, make the magnetic field stronger or spin it faster.
depends on the task, in the case of the outboard the system has to work from 300 RPM to over 6000 RPM.
thats why regulators are used to control AC voltages.

Re: Stator problems

Thanks for the feed back, I checked the resistance on the stator and it seems to be ok, Because there is no spark on one side, Im going to switch the switchboxes around to see if this chages the bank to which the spark is good, can the coils have an inpact on the swicthbox, mabe I should check these too.
Thanks again.
