Hi All, I have a 1989 Merc 80hp, 3cyl that has a bad stator. One local dealer (with good reputation) wants to replace with a mercury red stator kit: includes stator, voltage regulator, and I guess a couple other electrical items. about $750.00
CDI wants me to replace it with a black stator and connect direct to switch box. About $ 280.00 + labor.
Now which route do I go? Does anybody know a reliable souce for installing the CDI component(s) as I am not great with electrical. I am in south eastern Wisconsin.
Thanks.

jason;

Here is the page containing the stator for your engine, item 9.

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/365_30.cfm

Here is the CDI replacement 16 amp stator:

http://www.cdielectronics.com/InstallSheet/174-2075K 2.pdf

Note: This part drawing lists your switchbox, item 2 as one of the p/ns which will require you to purchase the adapter module:

Here is the price of the stator from one online source:

If you feel that you can handle the installation the stator is not cheap but it certainly is not $750.00.

Carholme and Faztbullet,
Thanks for the reply. My gut tells me to go the CDI route, too.
But I am not comfortable with working on the electonics. Mechanicals yes, electronics, no. Maybe I am a wuss.
So if anybody out there knows somebody in southeastern WI that works on projects like this, I'd love to hear. Thanks.
