Can a '90's+ stator be added to an older 85hp force and work properly? Are they the same size? I know they have different amount of poles but will it affect the ignition? I ask because I want to change out to give me a much greater selection in tachs. Thanks guys and gals!!

Re: Stator retrofit?

The poles refer to the number of magnets under the flywheel, times 2.
So you will still have a 20 pole system.

Sorry, don't know if any 90's stator would fit.

They are different. The difference could be just the connectors.Like Rosco says you will still need a 20.I have a stator/trigger and tach from an 88/85 for sale. Boats.net has a parts section that will tell you what will fit what.J

Re: Stator retrofit?

You really don't give enough information: What year Force and how far into the 90s stator?

Early Force engines had a 20 pole stator and there were very few tachs available. LATE Force--after 94 had Mercury ignition and I believe the stators were different. While (i Think) the mount at the top of the block was the same hole pattern, I think you would need to change the whole ignition, including the flywheel, not just the stator.

So: unless you want to invest money and a lot of time, stick with what you have. Of course, if you have the whole ignition off a non running engine already, why not give it a try?

Re: Stator retrofit?

I have an '86 85hp with 20 pole stator. I wanted to switch to a 12 pole but if I have to change everything then i'll just stick with what I got and order an old faria 20 pole tach off of ebay. The boat didn't come with a tach at all. Thanks for the help guys!
