Stator voltage too high?

1994 Evinrude v4 115 crossflow cd4 ignition. I'm testing the stator, and everything on the web as well as my Clymer manual says a minimum of 150+ volts across the brown wires. I built an adapter for my meter, and checked it against a wall outlet. It shows 169 volts as it should. The stator is showing 435 volts. Thinking this too high I borrowed a friends $2200 engine meter and it too shows the voltage as same. Is this right? I do show 127 volts ac which would be 179.5 using the X 1.414 rule.

Any takers on this? Couldn't be that hard a question given the talent here ;)

I dont understand 169 volts from a wall outlet.
should be in the neighborhood of 120.
I dont know the specs on your stator but you said 150 volts "minimum". 435 sure meets the minimum. The open circuit voltage would be higher than that under a load.

Re: Stator voltage too high?

An ac outlet IS 120 volts. Rule of thumb on DC peak is 1.414 X AC voltage. Hence a wall out let at 120 AC would show 169 PEAK volts. I'm reading about 127 AC volts from the stator. This should then be 179 PEAK volts (DC). That of course is within the recomended 150+. BUT. Getting 430 has me in a quandry. Is that OK? Or am I going to fry my new powerpack. I've not found ANYTHING that indicates what overvoltage would be.

Sounds strange to me to. We'll keep this post up close to the top until someone comes along with an answer.

c/6

Hooty

If you are using an adapter that is the same as the Rapair and Esitest adapter, the instructions with these adapters say to use the DC scale on the meter. If it is realy over 400 peak volts, it is to high. A short of the windings to the stator frame would cause this. This should show up on the ohms test, and short to ground test.

Strange indeed. That's why I checked my adapter, and borrowed the spensive unit from my buddy. Both say the same. This IS on the DC scale, and the ohms test show 403, and no short to ground. The whole unit is potted, so I can't check for leaking oooz
