I have a 87 model 75hp mariner serial #0B130551
3 cylinder all 3 coils just quit firing at once
thought it could be the stator but when i talked to the parts place they said the stator doesnt control the fire to my coils... is this the truth?? what makes those coils fire and if the #1 coil breaks does it shut the other 2 shut down? thx for all the help......

Re: stator?????

on the 87 the stator charges a set of capacitors in the switchbox, the trigger then applies a small voltage to the SCR on the primary side of the ign coil. the capacitor discharges through the primary windings of the ign coil.its a fairly basic set up.
but if the windings all open on the trigger at once you would have no spark, if the low speed stator winding opens you get the same result and it was a common failure. what color is your stator?
also retest for spark after removing the black/yellow wire from the switchbox.

Re: stator?????

the stator is black and the only yellow wire from the stator goes to the rectifier..3 wires going to the stator black(ground) red and blue
and 2 yellow wires go to the rectifier..
