Hi guys,

Definitely not a boat mechanics pro here - like, I know the difference between my motor and a fender. I'm having trouble describing what's going on so I'll do my best, and use a photo ;).

Steering play issue on a Volvo Penta 3.0 with SX outdrive. Manageable at higher speeds, super annoying at idle speed. I checked other posts and did some tests, the cable seems responsive at the helm. If you move the outdrive it goes a few inches before the wheel moves. So, I've narrowed it to the power steering ram. Fluid is okay, connections are okay.

I posted a photo of the steering ram. See that collar stamped Volvo Penta? Look to the left of it, you can see how far it slides before engaging the steering ram. I think that's where the 'play' is.

Am I right? Is it worn or leaking? Any other comments? OR, am I way off base and is it something completely different?

Thanks for reading!

Steve

If your talking about how a Vee hull boat wonders left and right at idle speed, the this is normal. All single engine Vee hulls do it.

If the amount of play your showing is with the motor running and you can move the drive without the helm moving then maybe an issue. The hydraulic ram will move when motor is not running do to no hydraulic pressure.

Hello , I am wondering how you made out with this issue . I have the same problem and I was wondering if it’s normal. My ram is brand new last year .
