Need a clue? Breaking down the drivers panel/console. I popped off the wheel cap, took of the lug, and wheel won't come off. Scratched my head, then looked behind dash where 3 bolts and nuts attach to the back of panel.

Tried taking them off and the nut spins with the bolt, so me thinks someone has to hold screw head, but I can't get to there until wheel is off?

Thanks

Take the nut and put it back on the wheel loosley. Then get someone to pull back on the wheel as you rap the nut and shaft with a mallat or hammer. . Should work ,or you may have to borrow or rent a wheel puller.

Once you get the steering wheel off then you should see some screws that hold the trim cover. Take off the trim cover and you should see the three bolt heads, they might be carriage bolts (semi rounded with no slot) these should correspond to the bolts that you see behind the dash.

I had to use a wheel puller on my steering wheel.

Got it off, but the cowling(trim cover) is somehow locked on, Morse Controls, and this plastic piece has to come off somehow?

In the photo looks like a small screw about 2/3 way down.

This cover is 2 piece. There are 2 "nubs" as you see one in the picture. They are solid heads, not screws. I popped the little trim top and was able to see the housing they are in. Was hoping they were pushpin to release, but not so????

I may have to use whatever means and then replace the damage. This is a Morse, makers of Teleflex and this step is ridiculous. The back piece where you see the seam IS part of the bolting telling me I need to get the first piece off, then move on from there.

Somebody had to have this wheel on a 1979 SS

Okay, I beat the crunk out of it and pried it off where the 2 pins were, ying and yang, now do I have option to free the piece in the picture by removing the brass coupler? and the rest of it versus unbolting the 4 tied to the bar underneath. I prefer method one. Advice?

Re: Steering and Dash

If the nuts are turning on the back side, I would pull the snap ring and the nut on the front side and see what comes off.

Re: Steering and Dash

I replaced the rack and pinion recently on my 78 16 ft S/S. I used a new Rotoflex and have the complete rack and pinion in my work shop. less the cable as it was way to long for the boat and had to cut off as it was frozen to the tilt tube. the rack and pinion is free for the asking. the only cost is shipping . The Bezel is with it as the new steering had its own. If this is part of a rebuild, I would reccomend replacment. as the Rotollex is much smaller and someone on here had found a source for a lot less the I paid. I think it was around a hundred dollars Might check with Cheapboboat Kev .

Re: Steering and Dash

My steering is actually pretty good. No bolts spinning, I am past that point. My question was whether to retain the integrity of all the brass attachments in front of the old dash panel by keeping them intact by removing the 4 bolts under the console from the arm.................versus......................leaving the stem attached to the arm and removing the foreward pieces.

Me now thinks keep it intact and release from the arm...opinions?

Re: Steering and Dash

Got the dash all apart and separated and labeled. This 79 model SS18 came with a windshield wiper and the old Lowrance sounder built in to the console.

I am making a basic modernized dash with my Speedo and fuel gauge, plus new switching for 2 bilges, nav lights, horn, courtesy/cockpit LED's.

For any purists(collectors), the wiper, Lowrance sounder, original switching for the wiper, horn, nav lights, Lowrance, and bilge are available at NO CHARGE. Transducer and cable included. This isn't a Ad, just help with shipping. PM me if interested.
Thanks

Re: Steering and Dash

Can someone remind me the attachment method for the 2 screws/bolts on each dash panel gunwale sides................I know all the perimeter are back screwed in, can't remember if the other 2 on each are bolted or screwed in from the front?

Thanks

My 16 SS are bolted from the front to the metal frame they attach to.

They were screwed in from th back but I wanted access at some point so I SS bolted them in place . Looks ok and easy to remove for aditional service if needed.
