Steering arm/upper mounting bolts replaced...

Here are some pics of the bolts which bolt the steering arm to the dyna-float mounts under the powerhead.
These are the HEADS of the bolts which are basically holding the outboard to the swivel bracket and are being pulled on whenever the boat is accelerating or in forward motion, (tension, while the lower mounts are in compression).

I don't know how much longer these would have survived before being pulled thru the holes!

I had to remove the lower unit to be able to get my hoist into position. Removed the powerhead.
Had to cut off the nuts since they were rusted to hell, (under the powerhead but expose to the elements at the front opening in the lower cowl)

Couldn't get the bolts out because they hit the swivel bracket at the front where the tilt/trim main shaft is.

Had to unbolt the lower mounts and remove the mid-section.

Went from a complete and running motor to nothing but the swivel bracket and power tilt/trim left on the transom.

Started the project at 8am and finished at 5pm yesterday.

Fired her back up today and all is well...almost ready to splash her again!
(replacing the bilge pump and float switch, adding a second bilge pump and float switch, replacing the livewell pump...bunch of stuff but it's easy stuff compared to what I just went thru)

Re: Steering arm/upper mounting bolts replaced...

I'm glad I am NOT alone! I'm going through the same thing as we speak. My motor felt like it needed new mounts so like you I dropped the lower unit, pulled off the power head and finally the mid section. I broke ONE friggin bolt that goes through the mount plate and now the midsection is at my buddies shop since I have to cut the bolt out and remove the exhaust plate to rethread. What a pain in tha arse!

Question for you, the steering rod that goes down and attches to the lower mount plate wiggles on mine. It looks like it dropped a little? which makes it wobble, so I pulled it up and she stops wobbling. under the Y of the steering arm there is a space. Do you know if there should be a washer or something under it..or maybe something to take up that space?? I want to fix it before I put everything back together.

Go to www.crowleymarine.com and visit the parts catalog for your engine. There is a wave washer at the bottom that is almost always missing. 4 out of 5 mids I've worked on lately were missing them. Three were rusted to the point that the yoke retainer ring was missing also. There is very little to no slop in the swivel pin when all the nylon bushings are new and all the washers and retainers are in place.

Re: Steering arm/upper mounting bolts replaced...

can you tell me which washer that is in the diagram?.. its not called a wave washer I guess... so i would like to be sure I look for the right on and see if that is gone. I'm sure it is becasue of the amount of play but the bottom nut is rusted pretty good..Can i apply heat to it?..

Thanks for the help!

Actually, if you mid is supposed to have one it will be called a wave washer. This is because the washer is deformed and appears wavey. If used, it is normally between the yoke and upper bracket. Look at the parts catalog and if in doubt, order all the washers, seals and bushings.

As far as the nut goes, I'd have to know which engine you have to determine what nut you are talking about.
