Steering Broke. That was a fun trip.

Wife and I went fishing yesterday and we're getting ready to leave when I fired up the boat (16ft Crestliner with 70hp Johnson) and stuck it in gear the steering popped and went limp. The wheel doens't do anything now. I looked under the console and I think it only uses one cable. Is there a sticky or some place I could be directed to that could help walk me through this repair? We've already been talking about selling it but I'm not going to do that til its repaired. Any help is greatly appreciated!

P.S. Had to have my wife run the throttle while I sat on the transom and steered with with all my might. wish I had a tiller handle lol

I'd guess yer helm bit the dust,...

Remove it, 'n replace it is the cure...

Is it a Rack, or rotary system,..??

I'd replace the helm, 'n cable, as a Kit,... cheaper that way...

Teleflex-Morse make single cable units with either style. Good people.

I believe its a rotary style. it has a hub with a cable coming from the bottom of it that goes back to the transom. not sure if its the cable that broke or if its inside where the wheel connects. too hot to mess with it today

That's the rotary system but if you have the room between the helm and the side of the boat, either will work. If you are going to get new, get a "no feedback" system. Helps when you take your hand off the wheel and the trim might not be at optimum....keeps the boat from steering off course on it's own.
