steering cable installation trouble

so i tried to install a new cable on my 93 foxcraft and I got evertying except for the cable into the motor... I have a 115hp johnson, do I need to lift the motor off the boat? and if so how do I do that? (im not a mechanic) should I take it to a mechanic? (argh)

how did you get the old one out. did you try turning the wheel to retract the cable.

well i cut the old cable.. and yea i tried that, i think if I just put the part that goes to the engine first then did everything at the steering colum, this would be a lot easier.

You should be able to disconnect at the helm, even if you have to take the steering wheel and assembly out first, it would still be easier than lifting the motor. Unless, of course you have a great way to lift the motor by a mechanical device... like a farm tractor with a gin pole and hook attached - which is what I used. Sure made it easy. But - back to your situation and without seeing your boat - I would take it loose at the helm, and have someone help you feed/retract the cable while you're at the motor guiding the cable in and with the motor at an easy access alignment. BTW - Does your motor mount plate have slots for raising and lowering the motor? That could be one way to get the motor aligned with the cable.

That's my guess without seeing it. I can only attest to my own action of pulling my motor off my bass boat a month ago.
