Steering cable locking nut?

I can't find much information about this so thought I'd ask. I am replacing the steering cable on my old Alpha One Gen 1. My Service manual Number 6 shows this apparatus on the steering cable where it attaches to the steering tube. My old cable didn't have this and I found only one reference online that just mentioned in passing that this isn't used on modern cables. I'm not even sure how it would work to be honest. Is this still used or not?

I think this part is used on outboard motors... not sure I've seen one of these before...

I was just curious. Looks like it is an older style of steering cable and not used on modern cables best I can tell. The manual shown above looks like it's quite old. My number 6 manual shows it in the parts drawing but doesn't really address it and if you look at the alpha one parts list online I don't see it either. I assumed as much but thought I'd ask.

I think its something like a "kit" thing. Toss one in with every new cable so if its needed they would have it. No longer needed with newer system and the part is probably real cheap

It's around $20 to buy one. Doesn't come with a new Teleflex cable but since it was shown in my manual I was curious. If you look online for old Quicksilver cables the nuts on them look like the nut shown in the instructions that alldodge posted above.
