steering cable measurement

i have a teleflex twin rack and pinion cable setup on my boat, and one of them is in need of replacement. i was needing to know how to correctly measure the cable length. do you measure end to end on just the plastic outer housing ? or do you measure from the end where it hooks to my engine to the end of the rack and pinion gears ?

look on the outer sheath, there should be a # stamped on it. that is the part #. other wise it is the sheath length.

thanks TD i havent measured a cable in so long, that i totally forgot what the correct way to do it was.
