Steering Cable Problem

I'm a new boat owner, so bear with me on the terminology. The rod that goes through the tilt-tube on my outboard will push out when the wheel is turned, but will not pull back in. The cable seems to be moving back and forth fine but whatever linkage there is inside the rod at the end of the steering cable seems to be detached.

Is it possible to just remove the rod portion of the steering system and reconnect that piece. I've removed the rod from the tilt-tube but cannot figure out how to disassemble it any further.....seems sealed pretty tight.

I've attached a picture of what I'm describing....hopefully it works.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback...where's the best place to buy a replacement cable? I plan on doing this myself unless someone suggests otherwise.

You're better off, in my opinion, replacing the whole kit (helm, cable). I prefer the rotary systems. They seem to be smoother and take up a lot less room under the dash.

As for a stuck cable, the word is patience. Use heat cautiously and lots of pentrating oil. You will have to pound it out GENTLY with a drift rod.

A "drift" is just a very dull punch. Basically a soft steel or brass rod that is slightly smaller in diameter than what you are trying to drive out.
