1974 17ft Kona 150 Yamaha 2 stroke ski boat. Replacing old single cable rack system which manufacture is unknown. Would it be okay to replace with a rack system without the NFB? The boat does not have power assisted steering and I've already received the replacement kit which is a ss141 Rack Steering System from Seastar Solutions. I was wondering if it wouldn't be too much of a difference with torque from my prop feeding back to the steering wheel. Thanks in advance!

My 17ft Bayliner with previous 120 HP uses NFB Rack/Pinion steering and it works great. Works even better without its loose Tilt steering wheel system (but that's a topic for a different post). For your 17ft 150 HP combo, I'd use NFB as well. Note: NFB means the motor's twist / torque won't back feed to its steering wheel. Yesterday, I replaced my boat's steering system (re: new cable non-tilt helm system). Bayliner boat diagram stated 14' cable. I removed its factory cable and to my surprise, it was a 15' cable. Even double/triple measured it to make sure. With this in mind, do pull the codes off the existing steering cable before ordering a new cable / new system. Lesson learned....

Hope this helps.
