steering cable upgrade?

i am replacing the steering cable in my '99 wellcraft 200 ss (20' open bow, volvo 5.0 I/O).

i was wondering if there was an upgrade cable or kit for the steering since i want to change steering wheel and the helm may be coming off anyways.

the current cable i have is a teleflex ssc12416. that's a 16'ft cable for a normal rack and pinion setup:

Fits Teleflex old style "The Rack" rack and pinion steering system.

i know teleflex makes no-feedback systems but i'm getting mixed information. does this work with inboard setups or on v8 motors?

maybe i should just buy a new cable and leave it alone!
help please!

Teleflex has a very good application chart on their site. I suspect that the minimum safe steering on your boat would be dual rack. Hydraulic is an option.

I went to NFB dual rack on my bass boat. It is very nice steering, and is very tight, which makes boat control at extreme speeds much less work.

hope it helps

Good advice. Don't go cheap here. I learned that lesson.

No accidents, thank god. Just poor feel and durability. Upgraded a year later and what a difference. I should have gone 1st class to begin with. In the long run, less money. Lesson learned.
Got both from iboats. Good, better, best. Should have listened to the best pitch. They were right.

Re: steering cable upgrade?

thanks for the tip on the chart.
here is a link to it for future reference anyone interested:

yea, it looks like the NFB steering setup is only for outboards... which come to think about it makes sense since there shouldn't be any steering torque through a inboard.

i wound up buying The Rack (SS14116) for my setup which is near identical to what i removed from the boat.

now i just need to find a good lubricant to help avoid problems with the steering cable again.

thanks!

I found out the hard way that the grease zerks on the steering tubes shouldn't be greased. The cable uses a fine oil for lubrication, and grease in it will jam it up. Teleflex told me the only fix was to replace the cables.

Some of us over on screamandfly decided to figure out how to clean and lubricate the cables. My strong arm steering is now palm of the hand steering. Here's the link.
