Steering cable - used for Evinrude 85 and Merc 50

I've been building up an old 1976 fishing boat as a project. The boat has the original steering cable that was used with the original Evinrude 85hp. I am using a Merc 50hp and it hooked up to the steering cable just fine. Bolted right onto the torque tube, etc. Now, however, I have lots of right turn and very little left turn. I'm using the steering arm (10 3/4" long) that came with the Merc500. My questions are - are there different steering cables for different motors, or are there different length steering arms (attaching motor to steering cable end) or is the rack adjustable ?? My current situation looks like if the steering arm were slightly longer, it would add more left turn, but reduce right turn.

All help appreciated.

Thanks,
Marty

Marty,

The cables are universal.

The turning is determined by the link arm, as you suspect.

Marty,

Check with a dealer. They should at least know the length.
