Ok I have officially worn out the search button with no luck so I am going to post this up and maybe someone can redirect and/or help me out.

I have an 79 200 Evinrude that I am trying to get off the boat so I can begin work on the transom and whatever else that I might find that needs looking into.

My problem is the danged steering cable, I can't figure out how to remove it.

on the left side (sorry I am a boating noob) there is the linkage that attaches the steering arm to the rods, and on the right side there are two nuts, one right on the tilt tube and the one on the cable itself, which looks to be long threaded tubes. What in the world do I loosen to get this thing off? I know it may be difficult but I don't want mess with the wrong stuff and break something.

Thanks for helping a noob guys.

PS if pics are going to be required I will be able to get some in the Morning.

well on my mercury i just pulled the steering bar off, on the right side there is a sorta half union nut connected to a threaded tube so i unscrewed that and on the left side i just took one nut off and popped the linkage apart then once i had the splashwell off i just slid the steering bar right out..was my first time so it took a few tries b4 i got it figured out :)

Re: Steering Cable

Disconnect tip of cable from arm on motor and loosen nuts on tilt tube.cable should come out Thur tube if you have enough clearance Turn whl as far as it will go and see if will clear tube.If not leave it loose and work it out when you pull motor.
If cable is stuck in tube it can be a pain in the *#@!* to get un-stuck.Hopefully yours is not stuck,I wouldn't wish that problem on my worst enemy.

Re: Steering Cable

The nut closest to the steering cable sheath (Black plastic) needs to be backed off. The linkage on the port side needs to be removed from the end of the steering cable (assuming this is a teleflex). You may or may not be able to pull the cable out of the tilt tube. That depends on how much room you have. You may have to unbolt the motor from the transom & slide the motor off of the steering cable.
Good luck.
