So I've had the boat running now got the top end figured out and it will plane and run all day but a new issue has arisen which I suspected it would eventually. The boat has a stick steer setup with a cable running all the way back and a normal hydraulic ram that connects to the motor. Well I had just gotten a new depth finder from academy and was trying to figure out the best place to install it, log story short I tried to move the stick to see if it would clear the df and it wouldn't budge, thinking something was blocking the motor I went and checked and everything was normal there, so I tried it again and i could hear something catching about midways down the cable the stell braiding is seperating and i can see the inner cable? it looks like the outer steel braiding is around a coiled wire that surrounds an actual metal cable, does this sound right to anyone or should that be a hydraulic hose there? I haven't got to look at it much more since it was getting dark and I don't have any lights in the yard to go by, I will take pictures and upload them tonight hopefully to give a better description, but if anyone has the slightest idea of how this is setup any input is always appreciated. THanks again. oh and the boat and motor are in my sig, not that the motor matters much in this scenario.

Re: Steering cable

It is a push-pull cable, NOT hydraulic, and no hoses. What you see is what you have--a broken cable. Just get a new one.

Re: Steering cable

Thanks FR I got to look at it on lunch and realized that, another question though, where it connects to the control up front can you just take that apart and get a new cable installed or do you have to replace the whole unit? I'll do a more in depth look tonight and probably figure it out on my own but I sometimes get impatient with not knowing about something.

Re: Steering cable

Sorry, that question, I don't know. I would assume you can get a replacement cable just as with regular rotary steering helms, but really don't know.

Re: Steering cable

Well upon further inspection today on lunch the actual control is a sealed unit there are some studs that stick up but i can't get any vise grips or anything else on them to try and screw them out so it doesn't look like it was made to take apart so it looks like I'm on the prowl for a new sterring control, woo hoo the gf will love those prices...
