Steering - can it jam the pump?

Hi all,
You might have seen the thread where I'm looking for mounting bolts for my saginaw pump. I'm putting the sheared bolt down to metal fatigue, as it must be around 25 years old. However, two years ago, I had another issue with the power steering with the pulley being badly damaged, and had a real tough time trying to find a replacement.

I replaced the pump two years ago along with the pulley, but I'm just worried that there could be something that jams the pump somehow, though I can't think of anything that could do that.

Assuming the pump is in good condition, there isn't anything in the hydraulic system that would prevent the pump from turning, is there? As I see it, there is just a high pressure line and a return, and whatever the steering system does, it's not going to affect the function of the pump.

I think I just need to take a very close look at the mounting of the pump, and look for anything out of alignment that might allow for movement that would loosen bolts and introduce fatigue.

Any experience of issues in this area very welcome.

It's a DP290 leg, and the PS brackets are from an old AQ205a, where it's mounted quite high on the left hand side of the engine.

Thanks in advance.

the power steering pump is a very simple gerotor pump. however if you have metal shavings in the pump, it can fail.

the mounting on the V8 AQ series are all the same. its a cast-iron bracket and the PS pump is driven off the water pump pulley

you should like to your other thread or keep it all in one thread.

regarding bolt failure, they would have to have been loose to fatigue
