I have a 14 foot Sylvan(supper snapper)with a 9.9 Evinrude.Been wanting to put consol for remote control. Is it possible or do you think it unwise to do? If any one has done this ,sure would like to hear your thoughts.

Bill,

Sure, why not?

You can build a console and then all you will need is the steering system and engine controls.

It will be a lot more comfortaable to drive.

Bill - If your boat planes with that motor you will need to keep the console very light. My 1975 9.9 planes my 13' skiff quite well (wife & I)but I suspect that it would not if I put much more weight in it.

Re: Steering consol

yes ,,, it's pretty easy but not... you'll be runnin' back an forth to the boat center to buy an/or exchange parts a few times...

first the right steerin' cable lenght.. look in bass pro catalog an see a diagram on how to measure lenght.. it only comes in foot increments..

you'll havta buy 'link-ups/hook-ups' for your engine for thottle & shifter cables..

than buy a shifter...

than buy two cables... thottle & shifter.. they only come in foot sizes,also..

make sure everthin' for the SAME TYPE cables.. [ there's many different kinds ]

dependin' on the shifter ... plan on $250 to $300 bux... just for that stuff...

good luck... an YES,,, KEEP IT LIGHT WEIGHT...

Re: Steering consol

I think a consol is a waste of space.weight.
complication, maintenance and money especially on a small boat like yours.
If you feel you must move forward for some reason
try a tiller extension or what they call a side steer or stick steer set up.All simpler lighter and less expensive.
Sorry to come on so strong its just it seems a consol is a lot of complication on a small boat.

Hi Bill, here is a copy of a reply I gave to another member. You can do searches of most topics by clicking on the search button near the top of the page. It can sometimes get you the answer you need without waiting for someone to reply.

I hope this helps.

This looks like what you're looking for. But you might want to consider the second item on the page-stick steering. No console needed, takes up less space, and it will cost you about 1/3 of a console/wheel setup. Fisher / Tracker have been using a setup like this for years on their smaller boats.

http://www.akmccallumco.com/store/store-jb.htm

*******************************************

http://www.wacomfg.com/205016.html
Half way down the page, in the center, it mentions that the console can be shipped. You'd have to contact them for more info.

**********************************************

Or you can contact these guys, they have 50,000 square feet of marine stuff. You won't find it on their site though, but you can email them. I've dealt with them in the past.

http://www.kendormarine.com/index2.ivnu

Good luck.

I gotta go with steelspike on this one. Add up the coat, loss of room, time. Are you handy making things out of starboard, aluminum, or wood?Is remote shift/throttle available for you motor? Everything is doable (well almost) but you have a bit of a project there. Good Luck...send PICs. ;)

I live in Mich.Close to Gaylord but I also do a lot of boating in Canada. We like to troll a lot.I am starting to believe as others that the expense and work into it wouldn't be worth while.
Bill S.

Bill S.

I have a steering console that you can have. It is aluminum. It can be taken apart into two pieces for shipping.

It may be a bit tall for you boat, howver, it could be cut down.

If interested, I'll send some pic's. Just let me know your e-mail address.
