steering controls

i have a 76 thompson open bow boat and the boat turns very hard and stiff its the cable system down the left side so i put those tabs on the planing fins that is supposed to help turning but it doesnt what can i do can you lubricate that thing or what?

jarvis,<br /><br />First off, make sure the cable is the culprit. <br /><br />Disconnect the cable from the engine. See if the engine turns freely. If it does, the cable is bad.<br /><br />You CAN'T lube those. Stiffness is caused by corrosion inside the cable sheath. That corrosion is a precurser to failure.<br /><br />Belive me, you DO NOT want a steering cable failure while running. It can be DISASTROUS.<br /><br />Replace the cable. They are less than $100.00.

Look for the grease fittings on the transom mount, it may be easier if you lift the motor, grease them up real good then move the motor back and forth about 10 times then re-grease it, you want to get good grease worked all the way in and keep greasing and moving 3 or 4 times until you see good clean grease coming out. If you use it in saltwater it is best to use saltwater resistant grease.
