Hello Everyone,

I have looked and looked on this and have seen a variety of options.

I am working with a '62 Evinrude lark IV 40hp... it had the old double pulley steering system. I will be adding a new system, probably a uflex of some sort.

What I cannot figure out is how to connect cable to motor! Sorry I have no pictures yet of this but perhaps someone knows the secret... there is a little hole on the motor handle that I would like to find a bracket of some kind to connect to steering.

Now I know I need the tube also (I plan to install splashwell mount).. just wondering how to connect steering cable to motor.

Thanks All-

Why do you want to change it? The cable and pulley system is far better on those old motors. You can change it if you insist, but it will be a lousy system. There will be greatly reduced steering arc, and usually interference with tilting. You can use the omc steering attachment to connect it to the motor. Use with the t'flex rod end kit.

Disclaimer: Cable and pulleys are lousy too, if not installed correctly. Too bad not many people know how to do it right.

The connection between the telescopic steering cable ram-end and the motor is made using Teleflex Kit SA27198/27199. They were still selling this as recently as one year ago when I called them. I don't think Uflex has an equivalent. Send me a PM with your email address and I will reply with a scanned copy of the instruction sheet for this kit. After seeing what it looks like and the fastener specs, you may decide to fabricate one for yourself. Good luck!

I used the EZ glide Steer adapter. i personally like it better.
the bracket is very easy to change for port or starboard mount.

I would prefer this, however, I need everything except for the 2 pulleys under the dash and the drum.
I was given a teleflex system, minus the rod that attatches to the engine.
I would trade this for a complete cable/pulley system if I could find it.

I can tell you that since my boat is an open rail design, I am a little worried about something getting snagged on the cables. Teenage kids do the darnest things.

The helm (drum) is the hard part to find. If you have that, the rest is easy.

Try sending a PM to the guy who started this thread.
He may swap with you or sell his old parts if he went ahead.
