Can someone recommend a new steering system for a 1960 Merc 400e? I recently bought a teleflex rotary system but the end of the cable was too big to fit through the tilt tube. The tube is only 7/16" ID.

Might have to invest in an adapter plate that bolts to the transom. Two styles I've seen. One anchors the cable to the side and the cable end attaches right to the motor tiller arm, and second style is a tube that bolts under the clamp brackets for operation similar to tilt-tube. I have also seen a few folks who have bored out the clamps and swivel bracket to accept a later, larger diamter tilt tube...

Thanks for your replies. Does anyone know if there are any new link arms that will fit this motor? I built my own boat and I'm not sure how well the transom bracket will work. I really regret not working out these details before finishing the boat.

Kajun37,

Hi,

Your picture caught my eye. I have a 400e I am restoring. Serial numbers make it a 1961 based off www.oldmercs.com.

The motor has been used 30-50 times and been in the garage since 1981 and hasnt been touched. What is a list of things you would work on?

All with the boat is in good order and condition, steering, trailer, 14'10 glass magic.

Look forward to your help.

Brian
