Re: Steering Frozen Alpha

No need to remove it, just clean it out, plus clean the end of the cable, lube it up and put it back together.

Power Steering Troubleshoot Order

Power Steering Troubleshoot Order

Read most posts/threads on topic and still need advice:

My 1988 3.0L Merc has always had slow p/s leak (refill 1 to 2 x per season) but no other problems. Boat was garaged for last 10 years and now p/s doesn?t work at all. Reservoir now runs dry after only few hours of operation and no p/s even when I refill. Can?t spot an obvious leak so maybe it?s in the cooler. Bilge is oily (I think) b/c of clumsy oil changes.

Should I assume pump is now shot since even when full there is no power and no high pressure leaks, or could there be another not so obvious reason? Steering is same with engine off or on, which is tough, but comparable to how it was when p/s worked 10 years ago.

My thinking is first change pump then find leak. Does this make sense or is there a more logical step to troubleshooting right now? Thanks!
