Re: Steering gear ?

There are a few styles of mechanical steering
Drum type cable- looks like a thick wire and is wrapped around a drum at the helm.(old)
Rotary type-there will be a round oval or disk shaped module under the helm where cable enters and cable will have inner sleeve and outer casing.
Rack and pinion-long rectangular bar and sleeve under the helm and teeth on the bar--cable similar looking to rotary.
These systems typically have some play in them.
You likely have either rotary or rack and pinion and there are a few manufacturers with Teleflex being quite common.

Thanks for the reply, 93evinrude !

I believe you are right it is a rotary and looks like a Teleflex, I went on their website but they don't say much on technical stuff.

Do you have any idea if there is any adjustment on those steering system ?

Thanks again

Smoky

There is no adjustment that I am aware of but check that the nut is tight where the cable enters the cylinder at the motor. There could be a bit of additional play if it's loose.

If you decide to replace your steering sysstem, look hard at the Teleflex "no Feedback' system. Just put one on my boat this spring and it is MUCH better than the old system. Reasonable price and easy to install. Cable length is critical- use the old cable to get an exact measurement. Have the boat on the trailer, as you may have to move the motor over to finish the job.
I don't know of any adjustments on Teleflex systems.
