Im new to this forum and appreciate any advice that might come my way. I have a starcraft 24 ft pontoon boat with a 25 hp evinrude outboard...runs great but the steering mechanism has stopped working.
The coiled cable comes out under the helm and recoils all the way in but seems to have come unattached at the engine. Do I need to replace the cable? How difficult is it to get into the mechanics
of the system at the engines end ? I guess I could really use an explanation of how the steering system works and how things are connected. Again thank you from a novice boater and mechanic.

if you can get under the helm with a flash light and get as many numbers as you can. also look on the black casing for any numbers or words.

If it is a single cable Morse Teleflex (have a web site) is probably the mfgr. As tas said, look on the helm end, within 10" of the connector on the end of the cable and you will see a number stamped in the black outer jacket....may be on the back side.....need a mirror to see it. The last part of that number is the length....like a 12' part number would be .........144.

It's a common sense removal and installation. Make sure the nut at the engine is tight...I think they stamp that on the nut....get it tight they say; don't remember how tight.

But, do not kink the cable; nice slow bends, especially at the ends where the connectors are.

HTH,

Mark
