Steering Greasing

On previous outboards I have just used standard Marine Grease picked up from West Marine or something on my steering cable end that goes into the tilt tube. What I've noticed over the years is how dirty and nasty this grease looks and gets over time and its also quite messy. I understand over greasing will and can get messy, but I'm just trying to avoid that nasty greasy mess on my brand new Mercury 4 stroke. Is there a better grease? OR maybe a clear type of grease? I actually heard one gentlemen say he wouldnt grease it at all!

Re: Steering Greasing

I think you will have that problem with about anything, the problem is everything sticks to it which makes it dirty, kind os a necessary evil.

If you go with something lighter you would probably have to apply it alot more often.

Re: Steering Greasing

My friend, you need to use in the tilt tube "Lithium Grease" Its looks like WD-40 but when it dries its become white grease, I will do this weekend in my boat, since I have the same steering problem... hopethis helps and please let us know how you did....:)
