steering helm/cable reeplacement

Hi guys,my 17ft Mako needs a new helm.when I turn the wheel to port it turns the motor fine but when i turn to stbd and get it almost as far as it should go the wheel make a popping sound and just turns and I cant get the motor to turn back.I assume I need to replace the helm.Should I also assume that I will need to replace the cable or can I use the existing cable???Charlie

What shape is the cable in Charlie? If it was installed with the helm, may as well replace the whole she-bang. Iboats got complete kits....all you do is add the steering wheel. Sometimes it's economically cheaper to do this that just replace one or the other.

I havent taken anything apart yet but the cable seems to be a recent one,visably looks fine.Does the cable just come out of the helm and tube on the helm.If I can avoid cable replacement it will save me a lot of trouble because it looks like a job and a half to snake the cable.Charlie

Sounds like a rotory system ya' got Charlie. All you have to do is remove the retaining nut where the cable connects to the helm and she should turn right out. Connect to the helm the same way. When you get/order the new helm, make sure you take the old one with you and get the cable type. This should be printed on the cable somewhere close to the engine. An exact replacement will help keep you from cutting or drilling any more holes.<br /><br />Hope she works out for ya'.

Yes it is a rotary system.Thanks for the info,sounds like a job I should tackle right away.I hope it is as easy as you make it sound.Charlie
