Hey everyone,

I have a Morse 290 Helm and the cable that goes with it in my boat, the helm froze up and the gear inside it broke.

I bought a Teleflex QT Rotary Steering helm to replace the Morse unit.

The problem is it is slightly different, the old Morse had you take it apart and the cable sat in a lip, and it was held in place with the cover.

This unit is supposed to just snap in place when you shove the cable in (as best I can tell it came with no directions) and my morse cable doesnt snap in.

Any ideas? Thanks

Its a Red morse cable.

-John

Re: Steering Helms and Cables

If you check out: http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...ng helm&**********=13696489&*******=048908091

It tells you that basically the Morse 290 which I have, is directly compatable with the QT systems, which the new helm is.

I guess I should then ask folks who have installed these "quick connect helms" are there any tricks or how the heck do I install this thing?

Re: Steering Helms and Cables

It sounds like the helm is missing the keepers in the input end. Without these, the cable won't "snap" in. Let me do some fishing around.

Iv never done one of these but i did see some place that you had to turn the wheel all the way in one direction to pull remove the cable, Have you tried to turn the wheel all the way in one direction to install it ??

I did try that with no luck, i turned the wheel in such a fashion that it would try to suck the cable inward, and snap in place :(

Thanks,

-John

I am not sure if you have a new cable too but I would recommend a new, matching cable. In some cases old cables cause problems.

Re: Steering Helms and Cables

I would replace the cable but its only 1 season old, and if I want to replace the cable I need to pull the outboard off to get enough room to pull the tilt tube out.

Worst case is I just buy a Morse helm that matches up 100%.

Re: Steering Helms and Cables

Thanks for the thoughts,

I did check and they say they are compatible with each other. I am mechanically inclined very much so, but theres a reason why its not all clicking together and I cannot figure it out, I may just order the Morse model and continue on my way, oh well just my luck. If anyone knows a way to get these 2 to work, lemme know :)

-John

There is an adapter for connecting older cables to the Quick Disconnect helm. That may be the part you need.

See it here, look for the "QC II Helm Converter":

Teleflex PDF file (small)

Re: Steering Helms and Cables

yeah, im lost, i guess i bought my new steering helm and cable together. It just clicked into place, then installed the pin. To remove, just stick the pin in the release hole and out she comes. Sorry about your problem, sounds frustrating.
Then again what boat part generally isnt??? :)

Cheers
