Hello,

I am getting ready to put a different engine on the pontoon. It is currently setup with a 1975 40hp and rotary steering.

I am replacing that with a 1975 85hp with a rack setup thru the trim bracket.

Question is, will the rotary work with the 85hp? Or do I need to put the rack setup on it? I like the feel of the rack, but it's to short for the pontoon.

Re: Steering help

I purchased my boat with no power, but the previous owner had an 85 Suzuki on it with rotary steering. He included the steering when I bought it so I am using the same steering for my 60HP Johnson.

Does your current engine mount the steering cable nut to a pivot tube mounted to the pontoon or through a tilt tube on engine.

The newer engine will have the option of mounting through the tilt tube and I would use it at 85HP. That means if you have a steering cable nut mounted to the pontoon it will need to be a little longer.

You might want to switch to a rack anyway if you need to buy a new longer cable. You can buy the whole setup for the same or cheaper than the cable if you shop around. I bought a setup once from ebay brand new for half price for my other boat.

** I would definitely take the boat a few times for a test run and beat up on the steering before taking any family or friends out.

Hope this isn't too much rambling and helps a little.

Re: Steering help

i very much prefer the rotary system over the rack system. and the no feed back rotary over anything, until you get to the BIG engines.

Yes, the current setup does have a pivot tube mounted to the transom, and the end of the cable attached to the motor.

Sounds to me like I am going to be replacing my setup.
